It's *HOT* Hot: Here's How Cotton Will Save You From Melting

This weather is too hot to handle, but– spoiler alert– so are you.

If you’re anywhere in or near the NYC area, you know that this heat is no joke. So far, we’ve dealt with not one, but two heat waves, unrelenting sauna-like humidity, and several unfortunate, sweaty encounters in public spaces (thank goodness for deodorant and blotting sheets). Oh, and it’s only JULY.

But regardless of whether you’ve decided to embrace the burn or have been chasing the shade, we’d like to shine a spotlight on the unsung hero that has shielded the Skarlett Blue team through this heat wave thus far: cotton.

Why cotton? Read on to see why we’re relying on cotton to save us from melting like a popsicle in this heat.

Why Cotton?

Here’s the gist of it: cotton is a natural fabric that is both highly breathable and highly absorbent. In fact, cotton can hold up to 25% of its weight in water! So, when you wear cotton, all the moisture (such as sweat) from your skin is wicked away while air is allowed to circulate freely. That means you’ll be cool as a cucumber– or as cool as a cucumber can be in 90 degree weather.

This is all especially important for your underwear and intimates, as keeping dry down there is absolutely crucial to avoiding the growth of yeast and infection. Can you imagine having to deal with a yeast infection in this summer heat? Thanks, but no thanks.

And while cotton’s water-wicking abilities may not be as quick as linen’s, really nothing can compete with the soft comfort of cotton. Using your imagination yet again, this time picture wearing a pair of linen panties. Imagine the stiffness. Double no thanks.

Wearing cotton underwear is definitely the best route to take to keep cool and ensure that you have the infection-free hot-girl summer of your dreams. So, either, opt for an all-cotton pair (we go through a few of the best on the Skarlett Blue site below) OR keep an eye out for underwear with cotton gussets sewn into them (also highlighted below).

We hear your question: “But, what is a cotton gusset?” We’re glad you asked. Read on for more answers.

Have you ever wondered what that little pocket on the inside of your panties is? Well, that is a gusset. And many times– and especially if you’re wearing Skarlett Blue– that gusset is made of cotton.

The gusset is really an additional piece of fabric that is sewn into the crotch of your favorite pair to reinforce its absorbing and ventilating properties. It’s the little extra cushion and line of defense that guards you from unwanted discharge or sweat stains on your clothes, infections, and the discomfort and chafing that arises from having a less breathable fabric in such close contact with your most intimate areas. This is why soft, breathable, water-wicking cotton is the prime fabric choice for a gusset.
